Reflection

Observation

Throughout the 14 weeks of learning Advanced Typography, I’ve developed a deeper appreciation for the art and complexity behind type. At the beginning of the semester, typography felt like just another visual element, but as time passed, I began to see it as a form of language on its own, the one that can evoke mood, emotion, and hierarchy. I particularly enjoyed how Mr.Vinod often used real-life examples, showing us posters, signage, and branding in the real world to illustrate each concept. These moments made the lessons feel grounded and relevant, helping me connect theory to daily life. As the weeks went by, I found myself increasingly looking forward to each class, often excited to see what new aspect of typography we would explore.

Experience

One of the most important things I discovered during this course is that typography is everywhere, it’s just that we don’t always see it. Now, whether I’m walking through a mall or passing by a cafĂ©, I automatically start analyzing the font choices, letter spacing, and layout of signboards, menus, and posters. This awareness wasn’t something I had before. I also learned how to use more advanced tools like FontForge, which gave me a behind-the-scenes look into type creation, from adjusting anchor points to kerning and exporting fonts. It was exciting to realize that typefaces aren't just downloaded, they’re designed, with a thousand micro-decisions behind every curve. These findings made me realize how much detail and care goes into every letter we read.

Findings

My experience in Advanced Typography has been both challenging and rewarding. Every assignment pushed me to think more critically not just about what looks good, but about why it looks good. I especially appreciated the process of creating my own typeface, which taught me patience, precision, and the importance of consistency. As the semester went on, I noticed my time management skills were put to the test. Some weeks were more demanding than others, and balancing design work with other responsibilities reminded me that creativity needs structure too. But even when things got hectic, I genuinely enjoyed the process. Typography used to be something I overlooked, but now it feels like a lens I can use to view the world differently. I leave this semester not just with technical skills, but with a new passion.
