Task / Work Process

We are given by task to design a poster that creatively integrates various elements into a cohesive composition. The design will incorporate photography from the DPI module, paired with typography and vector graphics sourced from the IVN module. The aim is to harmonize these components to create a visually appealing and professional poster that effectively communicates its intended message.

  • Create a typographic poster that highlights the "Quote of the Day" using creative typography
  • Focus on experimenting with different typefaces (mostly sans-serif) and unique design choices to express the quote visually
  • Utilize Illustrator techniques and small graphic elements to enhance the overall message and design.

Research / Reference

Theme

Titles: If not now, when?

For this illustrated typography poster, the quote "If not now, when?" serves as the central call to action, urging immediate action and the importance of seizing the present moment.  My concept is the typography will be bold and dynamic, with the words "now" and "when" emphasized through contrasting fonts, sizes, or colors to create a visual tension that highlights the urgency and choice embedded in the quote. The background may incorporate subtle illustrations or abstract elements that represent time which are clocks, hourglasses, or fleeting shadows to suggest that waiting may lead to missed opportunities.  The overall aesthetic will combine modern, energetic typography with a touch of minimalism to keep the focus on the message, creating a powerful reminder to take action and not delay.

Sketches

Design Process

To create a sense of depth, I used a photo of myself and layered it six times, progressively increasing the blur effect on each layer.

  1. Base Photo: I selected a high-resolution image of myself as the foundation.
  2. Layering: I duplicated the photo into six layers, aligning them perfectly.
  3. Blur Effect: Using Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur, I applied increasing blur intensity to each layer, keeping the foreground sharp and making the background progressively softer.
  4. Opacity Adjustments: I reduced the opacity of the blurrier layers to enhance the depth effect.

Gradient Application: To enhance the depth and visual flow, I group all layers and applied gradients to it, This added dimension and a smooth transition between layers.

- making background, having warm and cold colour at the same time to emphasize the theme 'If Not Now, When?

- making clock and applying colour related to photo of myself and grain effects to it.

Final Outcome

Final poster: 'If Not Now, When'

Reflection

This project was a unique challenge for me as it required combining techniques from two different modules, IVN and DPI. Despite the difficulties, it became an opportunity to dive deeper into experimenting with unfamiliar tools and effects, which turned out to be a fascinating experience. I enjoyed learning new methods, like working with gradients, 3D materials, adding effects I didn't used before, and the pen tool, which added depth and creativity to my poster design. The constructive feedback from my lecturer was invaluable, helping me refine my ideas and elevate the overall outcome of my work.
